WA Labor plan to reduce emissions and create jobs

THE CLIMATE COUNCIL welcomes the Western Australian Labor Party’s announcement of $240 million to create hundreds of jobs, reduce emissions and boost regional economies.

The Labor Government’s plan includes $218 million to manufacture and install  standalone power systems, including solar and batteries, across regional WA.

“There are huge job opportunities for Western Australians by embracing a rapid transition to renewable energy and clean industries,” said Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie. 

“Western Australia can be at the forefront of the energy transition by embracing its comparative advantage in renewable energy resources. Regional WA is highly reliant on polluting diesel generators and this announcement will reduce emissions, lower costs and improve the health of many remote communities,” she said. 

“This is a fantastic step forward for WA that will create jobs and economic opportunities. We look forward to further announcements to reduce emissions in WA’s largest grid, the South West Interconnected System,” said Ms McKenzie. 

The Climate Council’s Clean Jobs Plan found 10,000 jobs could be created in Western Australia, while also tackling climate change, primarily through ecosystem restoration, large-scale renewable energy, transmission and storage.

This announcement follows last week’s ambitious announcement from the state Opposition.
