Renewables are driving the fall in wholesale energy prices: energy experts available

The falling wholesale electricity market prices outlined in the latest report from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) show the impact large scale renewable projects are having in driving down energy prices, energy experts say.

Experts from the renewable and coal industries are available for comment today. For interviews contact Fiona Ivits on 0487 003 872 or fiona.ivits@climatemediacentre.org.au

AVAILABLE TALENT

Andrew Bray, national coordinator, Australian Wind Alliance, can talk about how this latest news suggests the supply and demand sides of Australia’s energy equation are becoming better balanced and is further proof that wind power generation is contributing to a reduction in energy costs. Says that the cost of maintaining the grid in the face of storms and bushfires points to the urgent need for action on climate change. Location: NSW

Tim Baxter, senior researcher, Climate Council, can talk about how a modern grid powered by renewable energy and storage can provide reliable, clean and affordable power for Australians. Location: Melbourne, VIC

Dr Amanda Cahill, CEO, The Next Economy can talk about the need to introduce new, decentralised energy systems in Australia. Amanda recently returned from a regional tour of Queensland where she presented workshops on transitioning to low carbon jobs. She says there is an opportunity to stimulate the economies of regional communities by introducing clean power generation. Location: Brisbane, QLD

Tony Wolfe, Latrobe valley coal worker/plant operator, can talk about unreliability issues in Victoria’s ageing power plants, why consumers will continue to foot the bill as we push plants beyond their intended lifespan and why Victoria’s grid is ready for the transition to renewables. Location: Morwell, VIC

Ellen Roberts, CEO, Solar Citizens, can talk about how new renewable energy projects and the popularity of rooftop solar panels are responsible for the fall in wholesale energy prices in Australia. She can talk about the need for the federal government to formulate an energy plan, to arrest the fall in renewables investment and assist in the development of a new manufacturing sector to kick-start the economy post-COVID 19. Location: Brisbane, QLD
